Academic Writing – Things to Keep in Mind in Your First Term! (webinar – August, 2015)

A One Hour Informational Webinar

August 14th,  8:30 pm (PST) / August 15th 9:00 am (IST):

Registration deadline August 10th, 6 pm  (PST) / August 11th, 6:30 am (IST)

This 1 hr webinar will include:
  • A brief introduction to the challenges of academic and University writing, and some basic points about how this is different from other forms of writing.
  • Some main elements of academic writing expectations, i.e. the thesis statement, writing analytically, etc.

The webinar is led by Mary Wilson, our instructional lead. For this webinar, Mary will be joined by :

  • Jaswinder Khattra, a research scientist currently working on developing next generation genomic assays for guiding the prevention and treatment of human cancers. He has a Master’s degree in Genetics and a Ph.D. in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Jaswinder’s educational and work place activities have involved extensive scientific writing and oral presentations. In his experience, good quality written or spoken presentations result from a fine balance of subject knowledge, clarity of thought, a precise vocabulary, regular practice and knowing your audience. Jaswinder’s family is originally from the Punjab and he moved permanently to Canada in his late teens following completion of high school in Nainital.
  • Maggie Castor, who holds a bachelor’s of arts in philosophy from Elon University and a master’s degree in library and information studies from the University of British Columbia. Over the past year, Maggie worked as a reference and instruction librarian to support Education students and faculty. Maggie has served as an assistant journal editor; co-authored interdisciplinary academic articles; and currently works with faculty and graduate students to prepare theses, dissertations, and manuscripts for publishing.

We will use a roundtable discussion format with Mary, Jaswinder, and Maggie discussing their experiences of academic writing, how it has informed the work they do, and offering some suggestions to webinar participants in their first term at University / College. Participants will have ongoing opportunities to pose questions or ask for clarifications, both by text chat and over audio.
